Reasons to shop in Oostende

Although they are rare, there are still places where shopping becomes an art. Ostend is such an exceptional place where shopaholics feel right at home and will find everything their hearts desire. This includes several pedestrian shopping streets in which you can casually stroll from shop window to shop window and from one side of the street to the other without being harassed by traffic. And at the same time, your children merrily follow you on a kick scooter, bicycle or on foot. Furthermore, in Ostend, the shops are also open on Sunday, which restores this day to its former splendour. And shopping is possible every single Sunday, not just occasionally. This way, you do not have to consult your diary to check if you are busy or not.

IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT YOU WILL FIND THE BIG RETAIL CHAINS INCLUDING H&M, HEMA, ZARA, … IN OSTEND. BUT HIDDEN AMONG THESE GIANTS ARE LITTLE GEMS, WHICH TURN OSTEND INTO A TRUE SHOPPING PARADISE:

  • Exclusive boutiques such as Pied de Poule which offers clothes and accessories designed by Vanessa Bruno, Designer Remix and Hoss Intropia

  • Exceptional kids boutiques including Tutti Confetti where – after a lot of nagging – young Ostend fasionistas can assemble their very own designer outfits

  • Foodies will be spoilt at Kaas Haspeslagh where they will find perfectly matured cheeses or at the Oesterhoeve, which supplies the authentic Ostend oysters.

  • And last but not least, let us not forget the many shops to roam through, including Corman, Ostend’s long-established book temple. The 5th-generation jewellery store Hulpiau has been a true beacon for those wanting to purchase an exclusive watch or piece of jewellery. Finally, be sure to stop at Galerie Tom Gerits, where you will be forced to make the difficult choice between a Leon Spilliaert and a Permeke.

And there is even more good news. Women, who have been blessed with a husband of the impatient type, will discover that Ostend is their perfect partner in crime. If you plan a visit in the correct manner, your partner will be more than willing to join you. You should start by incorporating a visit to the Mu.Zee, Fort Napoleon or one of the city’s many other attractions. In addition, you should point out that the sea is only a stone’s throw away and will not only offer fantastic views, but also clear your head. Finally, show the places where you can take a welcome break such as De Familie Jansen, the country’s best coffee bar, or stop for a G&T at Histoire d’O. And why not end your day trip with some jazz vibes in Vrijstaat O or a bit of Marvin Gaye in La Fayette. Come on, which guy will be able to resist?
