James Ensor passed away on 19 November 1949 in Ostend and is buried next to the tower of the picturesque Our Lady of the Dunes Church (Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Duinenkerkje). Surrounded by his beloved dunes, close to his great love — the sea. Every year on April 13th, Ensor’s birthday, flowers are laid on his grave.
