Daniel Spoerri
Daniel Spoerri knew and appreciated the work of James Ensor. When he visited Ensor's home in Ostend, the idea arose for a variation on the bronze room 'Chambre No 13,' a reconstruction of the Paris hotel room where Daniel Spoerri's career as a visual artist began.
The title of this work 'Ik, James Ensor' (I, James Ensor) expresses that Daniel Spoerri put himself in the shoes of the painter to create a space that can be seen as the embodiment of an artistic existence. It houses sentimental objects, references to Ensor's paintings (shells, masks...), and allusions to his artistic creation (easel, piano, paint tubes...).
The work was originally located on the Zeedijk, near the Ensor House, but was removed during the redevelopment of the Zeedijk. During the Ensor Year in 2024, the artwork was given a new place, close to the grave of James Ensor.
Opening hours of the artwork: between 10:00 and 17:00.
