Guided ‘Visserskaaiwandeling’ walk

Participants can learn more about some fascinating aspects of current and historic port and fishing activities during this salty walk, which includes a visit to the former training ship ‘Mercator’, the last Iceland trawler O.129 ‘Amandine', the DAB Vloot office building, the North Sea Aquarium, the ‘vistrap’ fish market and coastal fishing, the Westerstaketsel and the new port dams.

Guided walk on Oosteroever

The current port channel gradually developed at the end of the 16th century in the run-up to the famous Siege of Ostend (1601-1604). Since then, Oosteroever has often periodically played a role in military history, with Ostend often serving as a war port. Various relicts still attest to this, including ‘listed’ fortifications, monuments and names such as Halve Maan, Spinoladijk, Buskruitstraat, Fort Napoleon, 'Vindictive', WW I and WO II bunkers and Cold War bunkers.

Dikke Mathille

The Leopold II-laan curves gracefully around the most famous sculpture of a woman in Oostende: De Zee (The Sea). Although Reclining Nude is another name for this lady the locals always refer to her as ‘Dikke Mathille’ (Fat Mathille). Grard emphasised the volume of the full, round forms. In De Zee he portrayed the opulence and sensuality of the sea in a female figure. Until 1963 the work of art adorned the Kursaal Casino.
