Ensor and Ostend

Where:
The James Ensor House
When:
14/07/20 to 27/09/20

The opening exhibition of The James Ensor House and Xavier Tricot shines a spotlight on the unique relationship between James Ensor (1860-1949) and the City of Ostend. The exhibition was made possible thanks to the loan of several oil paintings, etchings and drawings from public and private collections. This pioneer of modern art felt the connection with the city of his birth more deeply than perhaps any other painter. He painted and sang her praises throughout his life. Ensor considered Ostend the most blessed, if not mythical place, on Earth. The purpose of the exhibition is to emphasize this important facet of Ensor’s oeuvre and is, first and foremost, a tribute by the City of Ostend to one of its most celebrated sons.

Perpetuum Jazzile in Concert

Where:
Kursaal Oostende
When:
Sat 26 Sep 2020

Our repertoire would not have been truly ours without the typical Brazilian bossa nova, swing, close harmony, funk, pop, and gospel. Today, as music is well on its move into the digital world, we are passionately bringing it back home to the world of the analogue.!”

Ensor en Spilliaert museumvleugel. Twee grootmeesters uit Oostende

Ostend and James Ensor are inextricably linked. Ensor loved Ostend: the city served as his muse and inexhaustible source of inspiration. He loved it for its crowds, the tempestuous North Sea, the carnival that painted the streets in festive colours each year. The name of the painter Léon Spillaert, twenty years his junior, is also connected with this Queen of Seaside Resorts. His nocturnal rambles through the city and long walks along the beach spurred him to create his best works, dark and...
