Brassband Zele (a city near Ghent) is made up of 30 enthusiastic and talented brass players and percussionists. The society was founded on 8 October 1995 with the intention of familiarizing the locals with the typical brass band sound and to compete in annual music competitions. Led by Gert D'haese as musical director, the band won the title of Provincial and National Hafabra (a collective term for several wind groups; such as concert bands, brass and reed bands and brass bands) champion in the 'Honour' section in 1998 and 1999. In 2001, Brassband Zele won the "World Music Competition" in Kerkrade, in the 2nd section. In 2003, Bart Van Der Strieckt, one of the creators of the band, took over the baton. Led by the new musical director, the advance continued and Brassband Zele won the National Brass Band Competition in 1st section in 2010. In 2013, they won the English Scaba Autumn Contest in Crawley thanks to which they received the "Zeelse Cultuurprijs" (a cultural award presented by the city of Zele to people, both in and outside Zele, who have distinguished themselves culturally). Since 2011, they have been competing against the best belgian bands to win the national title in the highest "Champions" series at the annual Brass Band Competition organized by Vlamo (the Flemish association for amateur musicians).
