5 walks in Ostend
‘Living by the Sea’ is Heidi’s lifestyle and travel blog. She has been living at Belgium’s coast her entire life and will never ever want to leave; the proximity of the sea has a positive influence on her mood. Whenever she travels, she prefers to go to places close to the water but she also loves to discover her own city. You can do a few nice walking routes in Ostend thanks to a useful walking map or app. Here are some of Heidi’s tips:
THE CRYSTAL SHIP – AN ART ROUTE THROUGH THE CITY
Public art fans must come see ‘The Crystal Ship’. Several enthusiastic citizens offered one of their house’s facades to be covered in street art or public art. The results are some impressive pieces of art that pop up all over the city. Artists like Axel Void, Roa and Fintan Magee could set their creativity loose on the facades and made some unique pieces in Ostend. The walk is 8.5 km long and leads you through the city centre and even to the ‘Oosteroever’ (East bank) to find the artists’ works. You prefer to not walk? No problem, there is a bicycle route of 29 km that also gives you a chance to enjoy the ‘Green Route’ (a bicycle route through the countryside of Ostend) as well.

A TASTEFUL HERITAGE
The ‘Tasteful Heritage’ walk is for the food fans. The title kind of gives it away because this walk takes you to heritage gems that have a culinary function as well. Take the time to go visit the ‘Grote Post’ too; this old post office building now harbours Ostend’s cultural temple. Furthermore, you can go to the ‘CultuurCafé’ all day long. Do you want a cup of coffee in style? Go to the terrace on ‘M’as-tu-vu’ square – Du Parc on the Marie-José square. If you want to taste beer, ‘‘t Botteltje’ pub offers 1001 different kinds of beer. You will find more good places on the map.

OSTEND DURING THE GREAT WAR
Do you associate the popular seaside resort of Ostend with the terrifying sound of guns and canons? No? Neither do we. And yet... One hundred years ago, when seaside tourism was just taking off and the wealthy upper classes travelled to Ostend to enjoy the restorative properties of sea water (and other stronger waters), the bombers unfortunately also found their way to the Queen of the Belgian sea-side resorts. Discover it during this digital walk.
